Frequently asked questions.

Helpful information before and after your appointment.

What qualifications do I have?

I am registered with the Initiation Society of United Kingdom under the auspices of the Court of the Chief Rabbi of Britain and the Commonwealth. The Initiation Society have a rigorous acceptance criteria and they have a disciplinary board with a complaints procedure. Their contact details are www.initiationsociety.net. The secretary can be contacted on 0208 455 5059.

Why circumcise yourself or your child?

Besides being a religious requirement for many, there are a number of health benefits to being circumcised.

  • Cancer of the penis is virtually unheard of in circumcised men. In uncircumcised men the rate is around 1/600
  • Females with circumcised partners are at a reduced risk of contracting cancer of the cervix.
  • Decreased risk of HIV when exposed to the virus. A study in South Africa between a test group of circumcised men were compared to a group of uncircumcised men of similar ages and background. It was initially a two year study, but after one year the study was stopped on ethical grounds with all the uncircumcised men being offered circumcision as the rate of infection for them was so much higher.

Why not use a hospital or clinic for your circumcision?

The home is a safe environment for your sons’ circumcision. It is known that hospitals and other medical centres can harbour bacteria and infections from other patients.

At your home, this is completely avoided. We bring with our own sterile field, and carry out the procedure with the highest test level of hygiene.

Traditional/scalpel method or plastibell method?

Clinics and doctors frequently use the Plastibell method. We prefer the traditional /scalpel method for a number of reasons.

  1. Time involved. Traditional/ scalpel method procedure takes approximately one minute – Plastibell method takes approximately 10 minutes.
  2. Plastibell involves inserting a foreign body, the ring ,for a number of days. It then has to fall off. The possibility of complications is therefore higher.
  3. Traditional/ scalpel circumcisions heal very neatly.
  4. Traditional/ scalpel method are far less painful. With the Plastibell method, once the anaesthetic wears off, usually on the way home from the hospital or clinic, the baby can be in a lot of pain from the ring.
  5. It is recommended to give as little anaesthetic as possible, especially to new born babies. The traditional/ scalpel method requires less anaesthetic than the Plastibell method, as the procedure itself is quicker and far less painful.

Why do many Muslims and Christians choose often A Rabbi Mohel to circumcise their baby?

Because the procedure is carried out in line with their religious requirement, using modern, sterile equipment with foremost care to causing the baby minimal pain or distress.

From what age can our baby be circumcised and what is the best age to do it?

The younger the age the quicker it heals, so circumcision is advised anytime from a few days old. In addition younger babies generally feel less as their nerve endings are not yet full formed, so the earlier the better; but anytime in the babies first year causes minimum pain. Circumcision can be done at any ages provided the patient’s overall health is good.

How do I book an appointment and how soon can you perform my baby’s circumcision?

The easiest way is to text the number on this website 07968225363 with your details and we will call you back shortly after. You can also email info@expertcirc.com.

We recognise that after your call you may wish to have the circumcision done as soon as possible, and we aim to offer you an appointment within the next few days – and generally no later than a week.

If you know you are giving birth to a boy, you can let us know your due date, and we can pencil in an appointment. We also offer evenings and Sundays and can generally accommodate your requirements. Express appointments, within 24 hours, if available, will be subject to a small surcharge.

What do I need to do prepare for the circumcision?

I will require a clear working area preferably on a table with good lighting, with a changing mat or blanket, nappies, baby wipes and red book prepared. Please don’t feed your baby for one hour before appointment and please purchase a new large tub of petroleum jelly/ Vaseline to remain unused.

How do I care for my baby after his circumcision?

Your baby will have double nappies on for the first three days so you can hold him as usual. The double nappies will also prevent him from hurting himself. We will also provide you with gauze and will show you how to apply Vaseline. You will be asked to change the baby every two hours for the first twelve hours. That is all that is required. Both written and verbal instructions will be given at the time. We will be in touch with you at regular intervals during the first 12 hours. In most cases it will be okay to bath your son after 24 hours, obviously being extra careful not to rub the circumcision area especially when drying.

What do I do if I have any concerns after the circumcision?

We will be in touch with you, calling you for updates on your baby following the circumcision. We are available 24 hours a day for any concerns however small they may be – day or night. Your peace of mind is our priority.

How long will my baby be in pain and how long is the healing from his circumcision?

With this procedure, babies usually experience minimal discomfort very shortly afterwards. On some occasions, babies may experience momentary discomfort when passing urine. Your baby’s circumcision should be fully healed around a week to ten days.

I am an adult and looking to get circumcised can you advise me what to expect?

The aftercare and monitoring is mainly done via phone. Loose clothing is advisable. Most men usually take of three days from work. You can however go back earlier if you feel up to it. Heavy lifting, sports or vigorous physical exercise should be avoided for one week. We use dissolvable stitches so it is not necessary to return to have them removed, they will disappear on their own. The recovery time is usually around 4 to 6 weeks.

What does the word Mohel mean?

Mohel is the Hebrew word describing a man who does circumcision.

Is it true that the Royal Family circumcise their sons and use the services of a Mohel?

Yes, that is true. Queen Victoria insisted that her sons be circumcised by a Jewish Mohel, and Prince Charles was circumcised at Buckingham’s palace by the Mohel, Yaakov Snowman.
